KDVS Fundraiser 2012!: Your Beacon in a Sea of Sound

With your support KDVS can continue to bring the best in alternative programming to the Sacramento/Davis area and beyond! Our station goal this year is to raise $64,000 and with the ever-increasing cuts to our already minimal budget and the growing threat of commercial media conglomerates we need our listeners help more than ever. Please consider donating at fundraiser.kdvs.org and choose from an array of premiums you can receive as a thank-you gift from us at KDVS. If you are more of a social type you can also call in locally at (530)754-5387 and long distance toll-free at (877)399-5387 and one of our friendly volunteers will take your tax-deductible donation.

Tune in this afternoon from 1-4:30pm for the "Triplofonic Souls"** a joint effort between yours truly and The Color Technic organized specially for this year's fundaiser. We'll talk about all of the unique things that KDVS brings to the community - from locally produced music, news and public affairs programs to live shows and even our very own quarterly magazine. Expect to hear a few anecdotes about our wild and crazy times at the station too. This week will also feature special in-studio performances from:

DREAMDATE - Sweet Oakland dreampoppers reincarnated acoustically just for you!

J-NEW - Local freestyle flows. Yell out a word and he'll go from there!

BAMU EXPRESS - Sacramento mulit-insturmentalist inspired by acts like Toro Y Moi. We'll hear some older pieces and a few selections from his latest album "Awful Earlies", a mix of darker electronic pop that sometimes reminds me of Geneva Jacuzzi and Glass Candy (w/Chris's distorted male vox of course)... First ever live performance!

During the show we will have a couple of exclusive premiums available including the "Triplofonic Souls" compilation, a selection of 60s and 70s pop, garage, soul and r&b hand picked by Lady Kay and The Color Technic. A special limited printing of the cover art designed by Bamu Express himself will also be up for grabs.

**Donate any amount during the show and I'll throw in a Limited Lifetime Warranty for "The Triplofonic Sounds of the Hacienda Sunrise" that you won't want to redeem.

Please tune in and help us keep the lights on and the VU meters bouncing for another year by going to fundraiser.kdvs.org and pledging.

Back in the Summer of 2010 KDVS received a self-released 7" by Los Angeles based Teen Inc. that blew my preconceived notions of 'nostalgic throwback' a tad askew. Not only does it sound like these guys grew up listening to Prince, but "Fountains" and the b-side "Friend Of The Night" both sound like they came straight outta 1984.

"Fountains"

"Friend Of The Night"

After a little more internet research I discovered that Andrew and Daniel Aged, the brothers who formed Teen Inc., released an EP last year under the further abridged name "Inc." Turns out the Aged bros. cut their teeth touring and recording with acts like Raphael Saadiq, Beck and Elton John just to name a few.

Now it's time to gun your DeLoreans and hit 88mph cos we're going back to the mid-80s for real this time, courtesy of former KDVS DJ Dogtones (aka Ben Johnson) who runs the underground R&B and funk label RysQue' Records out of Sacramento.

Tim Tucker's "C'kret" is the A-side of a split 7-inch with another 80s Oakland funk project called Davinity that Tucker also performed with. This, along with the Pierre/Veronica split (see video above), were both previously unreleased tracks recorded to cassette and only just reissued on RysQue' at the end of last year. For a little more in-depth reading on how Ben came upon these recordings take a look at the Beat Electric blog.
