Now let's get down to business!

Originally a teenage a cappella group from New York, the all-female trio The Cake formed in 1966 and recorded two full-length albums before calling it quits in '68. The group wrote and recorded much of their own material which consists mostly of baroque pop numbers and more soulful ballads like "You Can Have Him" (in the video below) and even shared a manager/producer with Sonny & Cher.

Notice Jeanette Jacobs (in green and on the left) acting a little out of it? Admittedly a bit strange, especially for this archival performance footage from 1967, but the only explanation I've read for Jacobs' seemingly detached mannerisms was that she suffered from epilepsy and was possibly heavily medicated at the time. Read more about The Cake's swift and overlooked rise and fall within the 60s rock and roll scene here if you like.

3/9/2012 New Dan Melchior, Italian Synth and Playing Catch-Up With Myself!

It's been awhile since my last post, so keep checking back during the week as I continue to update the blog with a whole month's worth of tunes to share!

Gonna kick-off this backlog with material from the most recent show. Soon-to-be new KDVS DJ Fred-Eric joined me in Studio B this past Friday to learn a few tricks and pick up some of my bad habits. Stream this venture into new recordings and late 70s punk HERE! -- Playlistings HERE!

First up is English-bred Dan Melchior's "Dogbite Meltdown #1" from the Red Nylon Valance 7" (SDZ Records.) The A-side and title track is an equally brilliant brand of hauntingly sodden guitar droning with convoluted lyrics that I'll save for next week.

Up next it's the Italian cold-pop trio Der Noir with "Stranger's Eye." Birthed in the summer of 2011, the group's debut album A Dead Summer was released on RBL/Bloodrock Records in late January 2012. (A self-released, self titled EP was also issued last year.) With the exception of "Lontano Dalle Rive" and "Cosa Vedo," all songs are sung with a forlorning Italian accent in English by vocalist Manuele Frau.

Now to close-out with another track de Italia: "Train Of Love" by Sandy & Cromo, off of the uber-rare Simple Fantasy Italo-disco album they self-released in '84. This particular cut could even top-off a punk set since it has a bit 'o power pop leanings. If not for the telltale hi-hat disco beat and synths it coulda been a rock & roll song!
