What day is it?

Seems like I barely have time to lose myself in any kind of writing lately... hopefully that'll change this month when I get settled into a regular groove, ah. Until then I suppose the least I can do is make a short list of updates (and to-do's for myself), so here we go:

  • TONIGHT: Local solo acts Bamu Express and Healing Potpourri will be performing live on my radio show tonight. Tune in to 90.3fm or stream "The Triplofonic Sounds" at kdvs.org. 10pm folks!!
  • post stream and playlist, add some midly amusing commentary (uh, that's for me.)
  • Thursday 9/13 show at my house @8pm. Come see KDVS and personal fave Mac DeMarco play our first house show.* Sacto's Bamu Express and Healing Potpourri from D-town will be opening. $3 cover. We gotta pay the man, he's coming all the way from Montreal! Check out undietacos.org/fb for more info, or just look to the right (and get here on time so you don't miss anyone.)
  • *meet the neighbors before Thursday
  • post photos from the Calvin Johnson show at Robot Rocket. (that's on here so someone can remind me if I forget.)
  • Saturday 9/15 show at my roommates house. 7pm w/ Naomi Punk, Wimps, Yi, Godspeed 209 and same roomates' band, Ennui Trust. Bring $$donations for the traveling bands please, or come early and help us move furniture.
Just put up a set of new photos from Babeylon's first show on flickr as well. Here's the link and a preview:

If I were a man...

... I'd want to look like King Tuff's bassist, Magic Jake:

Because he get's the chicks and the MOMs.
photos by Kayla Castanon

But until I'm reincarnated as the next Wooderson the plan remains to review the week in shows and get the rest of these photos up on the ol' flickr. (Because unlike the face-book, flickr allows you to keep the rights to the photos you post.)

Super Show tonight @ Luigi's

Garage and pop melody lovers! Two more bands have been added to the Crystal Stilts show tonight at Luigi's in Sacramento: La Sera and Magic Trick will be joining the current lineup that also includes Sacramento bands Arts & Leisure, Sneeze Attack, and Nacho Business (stream the show below to hear their live set on The Triplofonic Sounds!)

La Sera is Katy from Vivian Girls and Magic Trick is Tim Cohen of San Francisco's The Fresh & Onlys (both projects I've played on the TS, so you know I like them.) The last time I saw Crystal Stilts live was last summer at the Sol Collective with the English Singles and Nacho Business shortly after the Hub shut down for business. (That show was actually slated to happen at The Hub and luckily the folks at Sol Collective graciously opened their doors for a fantastic show.)

Also noticed that the showtime at Luigi's has changed from 8 to 7pm and cover is now $8. Get there early and mingle with the bands people. There's only so much networking you can do with a computer and unfortunately having a beer and slice of pie with your friends and favorite music makers ain't one of 'em.

A couple tunes for your earbuds:

TS 7/13/12: subbing for "The Creaking Hinge"

While Theo and Quill are away, Lady Kay comes out to play... records! Quill is in Lampoc and poor Theo is car-less in Sacramento. It's Friday the 13th and I should have eaten more. I was actually shaking from low blood sugar and trying not to scratch the vinyl I was cueing throughout the show. I think during one of my last back-wraps I even started talking about the songs like they were flavors; sweet and savory, buttery french tunes or something. Somebody get me some apple juice and a giant Nation's grilled cheese!

Stream while you eat.

I'd like to point out that while my show page from two weeks ago has a photo of English singer Julie Driscoll on it I completely forgot to play her cover of Donovan's "Season Of The Witch." (Thank you again, Lady, for forgetting to feed yourself properly.) Well, I managed to slip it in the second set of the show this evening and found the original 60s-produced music video to share here. The set design is super simple in concept but just as far-out and (datedly) cool and colorful. And that fur coat! It puts Penny Lane's to shame (Sean are you reading this?! I have to count on another Almost Famous band-aid to understand these layered movie references!) Watch the first minute or two and see what I mean:

TS 6/25/12: My Future Roomates & Great Bands to See Live

Geoff Soule of Sad Horse
Raven Mahon of Grass Widow
I had a few visitors stop by the studio on this week's show. My best buds and soon-to-be housemates H.G., Theo, and The Color Technic hopped on the mic for the entertainment calendar and to shoot the shit for a bit. (We missed you Sean!!) Catch the party stream here.

Since the 'show reviews' section is a little light these days I've gotten into the habit of snapping photos at shows instead. Gotta start puttin' all those years of high school photo and newspaper to use somehow...
More photos for your viewing pleasure aqui.

I can't seem to stray away from Bamu Express' latest full-length Awful Earlies! I've raved about Sacto multi-instrumentalist Chris Anderson before, but this is time he's really done it. This most recent self-release blends 80s electronic dance-scapes with distorted lyrics delivered so languidly (and I'll say this again too, because it's true) that Human Ear and Co. would be proud. However, to pin this guy down as simply "throwback" or "nostalgia" would be a true understatement to Anderson's adeptness in deriving a unique contemporary sound while pulling from the past. Here's a couple choice tracks from Awful Earlies -- expect Anderson's label debut on KDVS Recordings before the end of 2012!

And if you dug that -- Bamu Express's Koto Samples EP extracts bits of Japanese koto playing so elegantly that you have to actively listen for them in "Let It Down." When my friends and I first started envisioning a Portlandia-esque cable access program (which has since turned into a satirical morning show about Davis, CA) this is the track we picked for our theme song. Listen, just don't say "cacao!"

So cassettes... I still buy them and I keep waiting to run into some thirteen year-old kid who's never seen one. "I'm not old, I merely enjoy vintage mediums!" But what is it about cassettes that draws us late 80s/early 90s babies to this ultra lo-fi plastic vehicle of sound? If you keep up with your local D.I.Y. music scene then perhaps you already know they haven't become completely obsolete. Which brings me to another question: Can you still buy a new car with a tape player? I feel myself about to break into a tangent  -- my point is I bought a White Fang tape when they played at Luigi's in Davis last month and it's still in the tape player in the car (which by the way, is a 2002 Tahoe. It's the people who work in or move to Davis that drive fuel-efficient vehicles, not the ones who actually grew up here. We had a GM Suburban when I was a kid!).
White Fang's Positive Feedback is fun and unrefined because it was made to fit the medium, and it does so by almost comically taking advantage of typical cassette tape idiosyncrasies. These are the kinds of jams you want to hear laden with tape hiss and (intentional) pitch shifts. The minute-forty long "I Can't Skate" just wouldn't rattle you as well without the lack of production quality and the jarring jump into the a-side's standout song "Unchain Your Brain." It's as if they'd recorded one track, rewound the tape and rerecorded over it. It makes me laugh every time I listen to it because it's so obviously a cassette, but that's part of the listening experience. It's not so much about separating each individual song as it is about just making a fucking tape!
